Almada-Negreiros, Jose de
Almada Negreiros counted cross stitch patterns
(1893-1970) José Sobral de Almada was a Portuguese artist. He was born in the colony of Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe. Besides literature and painting, Almada developed ballet choreographies, and worked on tapestry, engraving, murals, caricature, mosaic, azulejo and stained glass. Almada Negreiros always called himself a futurist artist; however his style is wider, and does not fit easily into a category. His public art was often politically engaged and many of his paintings and drawings show common people in daily affairs or attitudes usual in socialist art.
